The Question No One Asks
Almost every hired Bible expert of any denomination will defend the clergy system. They didn’t invent it, but they all protect it. This study challenges the most prominent tradition in the evangelical church — paying pastors — by examining 14 key New Testament passages on church economics.
Four texts are commonly used to justify pastoral paychecks. Ten texts instruct leaders to combine ministry with marketplace work, serving “free of charge.” When the four are examined carefully, their traditional interpretations fall apart — and all 14 passages unite into one consistent economic plan for the body of Christ.
What the Numbers Reveal
According to Leadership Journal’s survey of hundreds of churches across denominations, 84% of church giving stays inside the building — salaries, facilities, programs. Only 16% goes out the door. The largest pieces of the budget are devoted to providing a special location and paying a special man to deliver professionalized services — mostly to the givers themselves.
